01Bitcoin ATM Albania: the honest status
The short answer: as of October 2026 we found no working Bitcoin ATM anywhere in Albania. Not in Tirana, not in Durrës, not in the resort towns on the coast. This is not a case of a machine we couldn't locate. There is simply nothing listed in the independent sources that can be checked.
We looked in three places. First, OpenStreetMap: a query across Albania's whole boundary returned no ATM tagged for bitcoin and no shop, office or bureau de change with "bitcoin", "crypto" or "kripto" in its name. Second, BTC Map, which draws on OSM: we searched the country in 25 km tiles and found no ATM at all. Within 20 km of Tirana, Vlorë and Sarandë it returned no bitcoin-related place of any kind.
Third, Coin ATM Radar, the best-known global directory of crypto machines. Here we have to be straight with you: its Albania page blocked every one of our requests, so we could not read the live count. The Internet Archive holds no captures of any Coin ATM Radar page for Albania or its cities, while it does hold them for many other countries. That is weak evidence, not proof. Before you plan anything, open Coin ATM Radar's Albania page in your own browser.
02Tirana 2017, and the claims that don't hold up
A Bitcoin ATM in Tirana is not a new idea. In July 2017 a company called Albvision announced Bitcoin ATMs for Prishtina, Tirana and Skopje. The Prishtina machine did go live, on 26 July 2017: a General Bytes BATMTwo, which promptly drew a public warning from the Central Bank of Kosovo. For the Tirana machine we found no evidence that it was ever installed.
You will also find newer claims online. A few exchanger websites say Tirana has "crypto ATMs in large shopping centres", or that machines are "appearing in Tirana and Durrës". None of them names an operator, gives an address or shows a photo. That is search-engine copy, not data. We don't repeat it, and we would not drive to a shopping centre on the strength of it.
There was once a cash market of a different kind. In 2017, five LocalBitcoins sellers offered bitcoin for cash in Albania, four in Tirana and one in Gjirokastër. LocalBitcoins shut down in February 2023, so that is history. For the cash routes that exist today, see our guide to buying crypto with cash.
03The nearest Bitcoin ATMs: Kosovo and Greece
If you type "bitcoin atm near me" in Albania, the real machines are across the border. In Kosovo, exCoins describes itself as the country's first physical crypto exchange offices: 13 branches and 5 ATMs, two in Prishtina and one each in Prizren, Peja and Ferizaj. According to its site the ATMs work without an account. In Greece, the Bcash network has a machine in central Ioannina and others further east, while OSM shows two Shitcoins.club machines and one Bcash machine in Thessaloniki.
We found nothing on OSM or BTC Map in Montenegro, North Macedonia or Corfu. For Montenegro the sources contradict each other, so don't plan a trip to Podgorica without checking first.
| Location | Operator | Distance from Albania | Fees / status | Data source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Albania | None | — | No verified machine | OSM + BTC Map; Coin ATM Radar unchecked |
| Prizren (XK) | exCoins, 1 ATM | 37 km / 40 min from Kukës | Buy and sell, no account; ATM fee not published | Operator |
| Prishtina (XK) | exCoins, 2 ATMs | 113 km / 1 h 33 from Kukës | Buy and sell | Operator (count); press (venues) |
| Peja, Ferizaj (XK) | exCoins, 1 each | Deeper into Kosovo | No fee data | Operator |
| Ioannina (GR) | Bcash, Anexartisias 75 | 89 km / 1 h 47 from Gjirokastër | 8% buy, 7% sell; showed “closed” | Operator + OSM |
| Thessaloniki (GR) | Shitcoins.club ×2, Bcash ×1 | 247 km / about 3 h from Korçë | Fees not checked | OSM (crowd-mapped) |
Distances: road, free-flow, via OSRM. “Operator” = the company’s own site; “OSM” = community-edited map. We used no unsourced aggregator data. Checked October 2026.
A few details matter before you set off. When we opened Bcash's Ioannina page it read "ATM is closed" with coins "Sold-Out", even though the listed hours are Monday to Friday 10:00–18:00 and Saturday 10:00–15:00. That may be temporary; it may not. For Prishtina, the number of machines comes from exCoins, while the venues (a Maxi24 shop and a Valoni Petrol station) come from Kosovan press reports. Kosovo uses the euro, so you will need euro notes, not lek.
04How a Bitcoin ATM works
A Bitcoin ATM is not a bank cash machine. It does not connect to your bank account and usually doesn't take cards. It accepts banknotes and sends crypto to an address you provide, or, if it supports selling, takes crypto from you and pays out cash. The operator sets the rate, and that rate includes its margin.
- Have a wallet readyYou need a bitcoin address on your phone, for example in a mobile wallet. The machine does not hold your coins; it sends them to the address you scan.
- Verify, if askedDepending on the operator and the amount, the machine may ask for a phone number, an SMS code or an ID document. That depends on the rules of the country it stands in.
- Scan your address and insert cashThe screen shows the rate and how much bitcoin you will receive. Check the net amount after fees before you confirm.
- Wait for the blockchainThe transaction appears in your wallet within minutes, but full confirmation can take longer. Keep the printed receipt.
Selling works the other way round: you choose an amount, the machine shows an address or QR code, you send the coins from your wallet and, once the transaction confirms, you collect the cash or a redemption code. Not every machine supports selling. According to their operators, the Ioannina machine and the exCoins machines do both.

05Fees and ID checks: what the convenience costs
Crypto ATMs are the most expensive way to buy bitcoin. The only machine in the region with clearly published fees, Bcash in Ioannina, charged 8% on purchases and 7% on sales. exCoins does not publish its ATM fee; its online order form shows a 2% commission, but that is not necessarily what the machine charges. Ask on site and read the screen before you feed in any notes.
Put numbers on it. Feed €200 into a machine charging 8% and you get roughly €184 of bitcoin. Someone driving from Gjirokastër also pays for fuel and about three and a half hours on the road there and back. The same €200 by card on an international platform usually costs a few euros, and by SEPA in euros less again. For the full comparison, see the quickest ways to buy crypto.
ID rules differ from place to place. Limits and any requirement for a phone number or document are set by the operator under the anti-money-laundering rules of the country where the machine stands. Bcash treats an ID-linked account as optional for some amounts; exCoins says its ATMs work without an account. Don't read that as a way around checks: large sums of cash always raise questions about the source of funds, in Kosovo, in Greece and again when the money comes back into the Albanian banking system.
06What to use instead, region by region
No ATMs does not mean you can't buy crypto from Albania. It means the route runs online. For most people the simplest option is the Visa or Mastercard your bank already gave you; for larger amounts, a SEPA transfer in euros, where the platform accepts it for your account. The details are in buying with a card and bank transfer and SEPA.
Tirana and central Albania. The nearest machine is in Prizren, about 2 h 45 by road if you add the Tirana–Kukës and Kukës–Prizren legs. That makes no sense for an ordinary purchase. Use a card or SEPA and, if you want to pay in lek, look at the lek P2P market, which is thin but exists. The capital's own picture is in crypto in Tirana.
The north: Kukës, Shkodër, Lezhë. From Kukës, Kosovo is closer than Tirana: Prizren is 40 minutes away. Shkodër is about 1.5 hours from Podgorica, but we have found no verified machine there. Read Lezhë & Kukës and Shkodër.
The south: Gjirokastër and Sarandë. Gjirokastër is the Albanian city closest to a Bitcoin ATM, the one in Ioannina, about 1 h 47 via the Kakavija crossing. From Sarandë, going through Gjirokastër, it is about 2 h 50. See Gjirokastër and Sarandë & Ksamil.
The south-east: Korçë and Pogradec. Thessaloniki is about three hours from Korçë, and we found no machine in Ohrid. The trip only makes sense if you are going to Greece anyway; otherwise the online routes apply. More in Korçë.
If you want to sell crypto and end up with lek, a foreign ATM is rarely the right tool. The normal route is to sell on an exchange and withdraw to your own bank account, with source-of-funds documents ready. We explain it in selling and cashing out.
07Beware of fake “Bitcoin ATM” sellers
Whenever a service is missing, someone tries to fill the gap, often dishonestly. On Telegram, Instagram or Facebook you may see posts about a "Bitcoin ATM in Tirana", a "portable machine" or a "private ATM" where someone meets you to "load the cash". No known operator lists an Albanian location, so these are not ATMs. They are cash trades with strangers, with no protection whatsoever.
The Albanian context makes caution even more important. In April 2026, Albanian and Austrian authorities, supported by Eurojust, shut down Tirana call centres behind more than €50 million in investment fraud. In November 2024, a police and prosecution operation investigated 32 entities offering crypto services without a licence and prosecuted 18 of them, including six foreign-exchange bureaux. Anyone offering "crypto exchange" in Albania today is operating without an AMF licence. The other warning signs are collected in crypto scams in Albania.
We will update this page as soon as a real machine appears, with a checked operator, address and fee. Until then the rule is simple: if it isn't on Coin ATM Radar and on the operator's own website, it isn't an ATM.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Tirana?
Not one we could verify. When we checked in October 2026, neither OpenStreetMap nor BTC Map listed any Bitcoin ATM in Tirana or anywhere else in Albania, and the machine announced for Tirana in 2017 was never confirmed. We could not read Coin ATM Radar, so check its live listing yourself before you travel anywhere.
Where is the nearest Bitcoin ATM to Albania?
In the north, Prizren in Kosovo, about 37 km and 40 minutes by road from Kukës, run by exCoins. In the south, Ioannina in Greece, about 89 km and 1 h 47 from Gjirokastër, run by Bcash. The Ioannina machine was showing as closed when we checked its page.
How much does a Bitcoin ATM charge?
Far more than an online exchange. The Bcash machine in Ioannina published an 8% fee on purchases and 7% on sales. By comparison, a card purchase on an international platform typically costs around 0.5% to 5%, and a SEPA euro deposit followed by an order-book trade costs less again.
Someone on Telegram offers a “Bitcoin ATM” in Tirana. Is it real?
Almost certainly not. No known crypto ATM operator lists a location in Albania, and AMF has licensed no crypto business. A so-called ATM that wants you to send money or crypto first, or meets you in the street, is a classic scam. Do not send anything.
