Is Kraken available in Albania? Yes, and that is more than can be said for several big-name platforms. Kraken was founded in 2011 by Payward, Inc. in San Francisco, and Albania is absent from the list of countries it refuses to serve. The useful questions start after that: which Kraken company you actually sign a contract with, what protection you have, whether your Albanian bank can send it euros over SEPA, and what a purchase really costs once every fee is counted.
01Kraken at a glance
The spec card below is the short version for Albanian residents. Everything on it was checked in October 2026, and the sources are listed at the foot of the page.

Kraken sits second in our ranking of the best crypto exchanges for Albania, behind our editor’s pick for card purchases. Three things put it there: access from Albania is confirmed on Kraken’s own pages, the group holds a MiCA authorisation in the EU, and it publishes proof of reserves. What holds it back is an expensive one-tap buy in the simple app and the open question of whether SEPA works from an Albanian IBAN.
02Is Kraken available in Albania? What the official page says
Kraken keeps a public page of geographic restrictions. In October 2026 it listed Afghanistan, Belarus, Crimea and the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Libya, North Korea, Russia, Sudan, South Sudan and Syria. Albania is not there, and nor are Kosovo, Montenegro or North Macedonia. The payment aggregator Onramper also lists Kraken among the on-ramps that cover Albania.
“Not excluded” is still a little short of “everything works”. Identity checks accept an Albanian biometric ID card or passport, but some features depend on where you live. SEPA deposits, leveraged products and certain payment methods may simply not appear for an account with an Albanian address. And the fact that the app downloads from the Albanian App Store only tells you it is listed there, not which services you will see after you log in.
03Who serves you, and why the Irish MiCA licence stops at the border
Kraken has two MiCA-authorised companies in Europe: Payward Global Solutions Ltd and Payward Europe Solutions Ltd, both authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland on 25 June 2025. Both appear in the ESMA register we downloaded on 2 October 2026. That is genuinely reassuring about the group: a European supervisor has examined its capital, governance and how it safeguards client assets.
The catch is geography. A MiCA licence passports across the 30 countries of the European Economic Area and no further. Albania is an EU candidate, not an EEA member, so Albanian residents are normally onboarded by another group company that handles “rest of world” clients. The terms you accept at sign-up name the contracting entity; it is worth reading that one line before you deposit anything.
For local context: Law No. 66/2020 created licences for crypto exchanges, but the final impact assessment of 13 May 2026 says AMF and AKSHI never received a single application. A new MiCA-style draft law went through public consultation from November 2025 to January 2026, and we have not found it adopted. Our page on whether crypto is legal in Albania has the detail.

04Kraken fees: Kraken Pro versus Instant Buy
There are two ways to buy on Kraken and the price gap between them is wide. The simple Kraken app offers Instant Buy: pick an amount, tap, done. That convenience costs roughly 1.5% plus the spread, according to secondary sources. Kraken Pro, which works off the order book, starts at 0.25% for maker orders (limit orders that wait for a match) and 0.40% for taker orders (orders that fill straight away at market price), and both rates fall as your 30-day volume rises.
Put numbers on it. Buy €200 of bitcoin through Instant Buy and you could pay around €3 or more, depending on the spread at that moment. The same purchase on Kraken Pro costs about €0.80 as a taker order, or €0.50 if you place a limit order and wait. Pay with a lek-denominated card and your bank’s conversion, often 1–3%, comes on top. That is why we tell Kraken users to graduate to Kraken Pro as soon as their first purchase has gone through.
Kraken is not the cheapest exchange available from Albania: Bybit and KuCoin start at 0.10%. What the extra fraction of a percent buys is a long security record and a level of transparency that many rivals do not match. For a side-by-side view, see our exchange ranking.
05Paying in: card, SEPA and the lek problem
Card. Kraken takes Visa and Mastercard, the two networks every Albanian bank issues. You are charged in euros or dollars, so a lek debit card from BKT, Credins or Raiffeisen goes through your bank’s currency conversion. If you have a euro card, use it. Some banks’ fraud filters block a first payment to an exchange; a call to the bank usually sorts it out. More on this in our guide to buying crypto with a card.
SEPA. Albania was admitted to the SEPA scheme in November 2024, and the Bank of Albania marked the first transaction on 7 October 2025. Kraken offers SEPA deposits to eligible accounts, but no one has publicly confirmed that an Albanian-resident account with an Albanian IBAN qualifies. Open the deposit section in the app: if SEPA appears with beneficiary details, test it with a small amount first. Never wire money blind. Background in our bank transfer and SEPA guide.
Lek. Kraken does not support the lek and runs no lek P2P market. If you want to pay in lek without a card, the only real route is P2P on another exchange, and that market is very thin: on 2 October 2026 OKX had a handful of lek ads and the others had virtually none. See P2P crypto in Albania.
06Security record: why Kraken has the reputation it has
In an industry where exchanges have failed one after another, Kraken has a long record without loss of customer funds, according to the sources we consulted. It also publishes proof of reserves, a periodic attestation that the assets it holds cover client balances. That is not an absolute guarantee, but it is more transparency than many competitors offer.
Your own account security is still your job. Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app rather than SMS. Use a password you use nowhere else. And never install a “remote support” app because a caller asks you to: the fraudulent call centres in Tirana that were shut down in April 2026 with Eurojust’s help relied on exactly that trick. Read our page on crypto scams in Albania.
For long-term holdings, even on a strong exchange, the rule does not change: whatever you are not actively trading belongs in a wallet you control yourself.
07The apps in the Albanian App Store
Kraken publishes two apps and both are listed in Apple’s Albanian store. The main Kraken app is rated 4.92 from 165 ratings and Kraken Pro 4.82 from 90 (App Store data, 2 October 2026). Binance, by comparison, has more than 11,000 ratings in Albania, so Kraken is far less widespread, but the people who use it rate it highly.
The two-app split makes sense once you see it. The main app is built for quick buys and sells and for checking your balance; Kraken Pro carries the charts, the order book and limit orders. Many people start with the first and move to the second once they notice what the convenience costs. One login works for both.
08How to open a Kraken account from Albania
The process is the same as at any serious exchange. Based on Kraken’s documentation, the steps are:
- Go to kraken.com or download the appUse only the official site or the App Store / Google Play, and check the publisher name: lookalike apps exist.
- Choose Albania as your country of residenceGive your real address. A false one can get your account frozen when you try to withdraw.
- Verify your identityUpload your ID card or passport and take a selfie. You may also be asked for proof of address.
- Switch on 2FAUse an authenticator app and keep the backup codes offline.
- Deposit or buyUse a card for the first purchase, or check whether SEPA appears for your account. Start small.
Once you have bought, remember the tax side: under Law No. 29/2023, individuals’ crypto gains have been taxed at 15% since 1 January 2024, self-declared by 31 March of the following year. Keep your transaction history. See crypto tax in Albania.
09Who Kraken suits, and our verdict
Kraken is our number two for Albania: access confirmed on the official page, a long security record with proof of reserves, and fair fees on Kraken Pro. It loses points for the costly Instant Buy, no lek support and SEPA from Albania that nobody can yet guarantee.
Strengths
- Albania is absent from the official prohibited list
- Group holds MiCA authorisation in Ireland and publishes proof of reserves
- Kraken Pro: 0.25% maker / 0.40% taker, with volume discounts
- Long record without loss of customer funds
- Apps rated 4.8–4.9 in the Albanian App Store
Weaknesses
- Instant Buy costs about 1.5% plus spread
- No lek deposits and no lek P2P
- SEPA from an Albanian IBAN unconfirmed
- MiCA does not cover Albanian residents; no AMF licence
- Far less used in Albania than Binance or Bybit
10Kraken alternatives for Albanian residents
If Kraken is not the right fit, here is where to look next. For quick card and Apple Pay purchases, read our CEX.IO review, the editor’s pick for buying by card. For a wider product range and 0.10% spot fees, there is Bybit, though its European licence does not cover Albania either. If small-cap altcoins are your interest, KuCoin lists far more of them. For copy trading, Bitget is the specialist, but without any MiCA authorisation. The full ten-platform comparison is on the best crypto exchanges in Albania.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kraken available in Albania?
Yes. Albania does not appear on the list of prohibited jurisdictions on Kraken’s own support site (checked October 2026), so Albanian residents can register and verify with an ID card or passport. Not being excluded does not mean every feature is switched on for your account: SEPA deposits, for example, depend on eligibility.
Is Kraken licensed or regulated in Albania?
No. Kraken holds no licence from Albania’s Financial Supervisory Authority (AMF), and neither does any other exchange. The government’s impact assessment of 13 May 2026 records zero applications and zero licensed entities under Law No. 66/2020.
Does Kraken’s MiCA licence protect Albanian users?
No. Payward Global Solutions Ltd and Payward Europe Solutions Ltd were authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland on 25 June 2025, but a MiCA authorisation covers customers in the European Economic Area only. Albania is outside the EEA, so the licence is a trust signal about the group rather than a protection for you.
What are Kraken’s fees for Albanian users?
On Kraken Pro the base tier is 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker, falling as monthly volume grows (secondary sources, October 2026). Instant Buy in the simple Kraken app costs more, roughly 1.5% plus the spread. If your card is in lek, your bank’s currency conversion comes on top.
Can I deposit Albanian lek on Kraken?
No. Kraken does not support the lek and has no lek P2P market. You can pay by Visa or Mastercard, or send euros. SEPA is offered to eligible accounts, but nobody has publicly confirmed that an Albanian IBAN qualifies, so check the deposit screen in the app before sending money.
