Lezhë, Kukës and Kosovo over the mountains

For someone in Kukës the nearest Bitcoin ATM is 40 minutes away in Prizren, while Tirana is two hours. Lezhë and Shëngjin, meanwhile, sit between Tirana and Shkodër. Here is what that means in practice.

Northern Albania holds two realities that rarely get mentioned together. Lezhë and Shëngjin beach are an hour from Tirana, on the road to Shkodër and Montenegro. Kukës, on the far side of the mountains, is closer to Kosovo than to its own capital. For crypto that has a concrete consequence: people in Kukës are the Albanians with a Bitcoin ATM within an hour’s drive, in Prizren.

01The north at a glance

Shkodër has its own page, with the hostel that takes bitcoin and the Montenegro border: see crypto in Shkodër. Here we cover the north’s two other municipalities, Lezhë and Kukës, with the data we have for each. Population comes from the 2023 census by INSTAT, distances from the OSRM router in free-flowing traffic.

02Lezhë and Shëngjin: the beach town between Tirana and Shkodër

Lezhë municipality has 51,354 residents, but the town itself only about 14,687 (Wikipedia’s town figure from the same census). The rest live in villages and along the coast, around Shëngjin with its port and beach. Lezhë sits on the national road from Montenegro to Tirana and is known historically as the site of the League of Lezhë and of Skanderbeg. Tirana is 60 km and about an hour away; Shkodër 38 km, just under an hour.

Lezhë’s financial map is thin. Within 2.5 km of the centre, OpenStreetMap shows 5 bank points (Intesa, Union, Credins, Tirana Bank, Fibank), a single cash machine and a single exchange office. That is almost certainly a mapping gap rather than reality, but it does show Lezhë is no financial centre. No Bitcoin ATM is mapped on OpenStreetMap/BTC Map in Lezhë or Shëngjin as of October 2026; check Coin ATM Radar for live status.

In summer Shëngjin fills with holidaymakers, many from Kosovo, which INSTAT figures reported in the press show to be Albania’s largest source of foreign visitors. They arrive with euros, while many small coastal businesses work in lek cash. Crypto is accepted nowhere: the nearest mapped place that takes bitcoin is the 90 Pods hostel in Shkodër, with Lightning and on-chain (last checked September 2024, so ask before you pay).

Bank card icon, the practical way to pay in Shëngjin
In Shëngjin and Lezhë you pay by card or in lek cash. No mapped business accepts crypto.

For holidaymakers the advice is simple: withdraw lek before heading to the beach, because the map shows very few cash machines in the area, and when a terminal asks, pay in lek rather than euros. For Lezhë residents who want to buy crypto, Tirana offers nothing a phone doesn’t: a platform, a card and ID verification. Our guide to buying crypto with a card covers every step.

Lezhë is also a commuter town. Many residents work or study in Tirana or Shkodër and come home in the evening, so they use the same banks and cards as the capital. For crypto that means no practical difference between someone in Lezhë and someone in Tirana: an international platform, ID verification and payment by card or SEPA. The only difference is that in Lezhë you won’t find community events or co-working spaces where you could ask someone who has done it before.

03Kukës: the town that knows Kosovo better than anyone

Kukës municipality has 36,125 residents and the town about 15,643. The economy rests on farming, carpets, copper processing and mountain tourism, and the A1 motorway, the “Rruga e Kombit”, links it to Kosovo on one side and Tirana on the other. Kukës also carries a memory that ties it to its neighbour for good: in 1999 it sheltered around 500,000 refugees from Kosovo.

In July 2021 Kukës International Airport “Zayed” opened as an alternative to Tirana’s airport. Forecasts at the time expected about 70% of its passengers to come from Kosovo. We have not verified current routes, so check before you plan.

On OpenStreetMap, Kukës has 6 bank points (Raiffeisen, OTP, Union, BKT, AfroKredit and an outdated National Bank of Greece tag), just 1 cash machine and 1 exchange office, “AK Invest”. Here too the map is very likely incomplete. No Bitcoin ATM is mapped on OpenStreetMap/BTC Map in Kukës as of October 2026; check Coin ATM Radar for live status.

In practice many Kukës families live with two currencies: lek for wages and pensions, euros for anything coming from Kosovo or from relatives abroad. With a single mapped cash machine and exchange office, it is no surprise that Kosovo feels closer for money matters too. That makes the question of the Prizren Bitcoin ATM less theoretical here than anywhere else in Albania.

04Kosovo is closer than Tirana: the exCoins ATMs

From Kukës the Morinë crossing is minutes away, and Prizren is roughly 20 km beyond the border. OSRM gives 37 km and about 40 minutes in total. Prishtina is 113 km, about 1 hour 35 minutes. Tirana, by comparison, is 146 km and more than two hours. Kosovo uses the euro, so everything there is paid in euros.

The main operator is exCoins, which describes itself as Kosovo’s first physical exchange offices for cryptocurrencies. According to its website it has 13 branches and 5 crypto ATMs, with its head office at Ali Kelmendi 72 in Prishtina. The table shows where the machines are.

The exCoins link to Albania isn’t new. In October 2017, when Telegrafi listed the LocalBitcoins sellers offering bitcoin for cash in Albania, “Excoins.me” was one of the five names. Today the operator has no office in Albania, but for many northern Albanians it is still the best-known name in the region. Albanian-language searches show it too: type “crypto exchange” into Google in Albanian and the autocomplete suggestions are full of Prishtina, Prizren and Kosovo, far more than Albanian towns.

What we don’t know: the exact ATM fees. The exCoins web order form shows a 2% commission for online orders, but that isn’t necessarily what the machines charge. For comparison, the Bcash ATM in Ioannina, in the south, takes 8% on purchases. Ask at a branch or by phone before you put money in.

05Rules across the border

Kosovo is not in the European Union, so the EU’s MiCA rules don’t apply there. Kosovo has its own law: Law No. 08/L-295 on Crypto-Assets, whose text the Central Bank of Kosovo published in April 2026. We have not checked how it affects the status of operators like exCoins. Amount limits and when ID is required are set by the operator under Kosovan law.

For you as an Albanian resident, some things don’t change at Morinë. Crypto gains are taxed at 15% under Law 29/2023 and declared by 31 March, wherever you bought. Large sums of cash at the border have their own customs rules on both sides. And in Albania no platform has been licensed by AMF under Law 66/2020 as of October 2026. Where are the Bitcoin ATMs in Kosovo?

Kosovan operator exCoins says on its website that it has 5 crypto ATMs (two in Prishtina and one each in Prizren, Peja and Ferizaj) plus 13 branches. From Kukës, Prizren is about 40 minutes by car via the Morinë crossing, and Prishtina about 1 hour 35 minutes.

What currency do I need in Kosovo?

Is crypto regulated in Kosovo?

Kosovo has adopted Law No. 08/L-295 on Crypto-Assets, whose text the Central Bank of Kosovo published in April 2026. We have not verified how it affects the licensing of operators such as exCoins. As an Albanian resident, your gains are still taxed in Albania at 15%.
