01How P2P crypto escrow works
On a normal exchange you buy from the order book and pay the platform. On P2P you pay another person, usually by bank transfer, and the platform acts only as guarantor. That makes P2P the one common way to buy crypto directly with lek, and also the place where most crypto scams happen.
The mechanism is escrow. When you open an order with a seller, the platform locks the seller's coins. You send the money by the agreed method, press "I have paid", and the seller, once they see the money in their account, releases the coins to you. If something goes wrong, you open an appeal and the platform's team decides based on the order chat and the evidence.
That protection exists only inside the platform. The moment you move to Telegram, WhatsApp or a face-to-face meeting, there is no escrow. On Binance, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin and Bitget, P2P also requires your exchange account to be fully verified (KYC), just as for ordinary trading.
02The lek P2P market: our 2 October 2026 snapshot
Plenty of guides talk about "the Albanian P2P market" as if it were busy. We pulled the public ad books of the main platforms on 2 October 2026 through their public APIs. The result: the lek appears in the currency menu, but almost nobody is trading it.
| Platform | USDT ads in lek | Price | Payment methods |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance P2P | 0 to buy, 1 to sell; BTC/ALL: 1 ad | 72.13 ALL (sell side), 2,000–98,883 ALL | “Bank Transfer”, “OTP BANK” |
| OKX P2P | About 5 bank-transfer ads to buy | 78.15 ALL (buy), 77.78 ALL (sell) | “bank”, Paysera |
| Bybit P2P | 0 | — | — |
| KuCoin P2P | 0 | — | — |
| Bitget P2P | 0 | — | — |
Source: each platform’s public P2P API, checked 2 October 2026. Reference rate that day: 1 USD = 81.40 ALL. Ads change by the hour; treat this as a snapshot, not a live price.
A few things stand out. First, OKX prices were roughly 4% below the dollar reference rate in both directions. That may reflect local conditions or a stale reference rate, but it also shows how little liquidity there is: with five ads, a single seller sets the price. On the selling side there were more merchant bids, many of them well below the reference rate.
Second, no Albanian bank appears by name as a payment method, except OTP Bank on Binance. There are no tags for BKT, Raiffeisen, Credins, Intesa or Easypay. Buyer and seller agree in the chat which bank they will use. That is not a problem in itself, but it means you must check the account holder's name carefully.
Third, minimum order sizes are typically 2,000 to 20,000 ALL, so very small purchases often don't fit. For platform detail, read our OKX and Binance reviews; for USDT itself and which network to use, see USDT in Albania.
03Euro P2P: the practical alternative
Many Albanians hold euros, from remittances, tourism or wages. In euros, Binance's P2P market is far deeper than in lek. When we filtered USDT/EUR ads by the country "Albania (Shqipëri)", we found 2 ads one way and 7 the other, mostly using methods such as Wise, Skrill, SEPA or Revolut. Without the country filter there are many more euro ads.
There is a catch. Revolut does not open accounts for Albanian residents, and we could not verify whether Wise does. So most of the methods in those ads are not really available to you. The method that makes sense for a resident is a SEPA euro transfer from your own account at an Albanian bank. Albania is in SEPA and the first transfer went through on 7 October 2025, but ask the seller first whether they accept money from an Albanian IBAN. Never pay from someone else's account. More in bank transfer and SEPA and in Revolut, Wise and PayPal in Albania.
Often, instead of euro P2P, it is simpler to deposit euros straight to an exchange by SEPA, where that is offered for your account, or to buy by card. No counterparty, no chat, no risk of a forged receipt.
04LocalBitcoins, Paxful and what is left
If you have read older articles, you may have seen LocalBitcoins or Paxful described as "where Albanians buy bitcoin". Neither is an option any more.
- Oct 2017Five LocalBitcoins sellers in Albania
Four in Tirana and one in Gjirokastër, with minimum trades of €100–350, according to Telegrafi.
- Feb 2023LocalBitcoins closes
The Finnish platform shuts down worldwide.
- Apr 2023Paxful announces closure, then carries on
The platform stayed open after the announcement.
- 1 Nov 2025Paxful stops trading, according to reports
Secondary sources; we could not confirm it with the operator directly.
- 2 Oct 2026Lek P2P: almost empty
Binance 0–1 ads, OKX about 5, Bybit/KuCoin/Bitget none.
Decentralised P2P platforms such as Bisq, Hodl Hodl and RoboSats also exist. We could not read their lek order books and assume lek liquidity there is negligible. They also put more of the technical responsibility on the user, which raises the risk of costly mistakes for beginners.
05KYC, your bank and tax
P2P is not a way to avoid verification. On the major platforms your account must be fully verified, and the name on the paying bank account must match the name on your exchange account. Serious sellers check this and reject payments from any other name.
Your bank sees every transfer. Since the 2019 amendments to Law No. 9917/2008 on the prevention of money laundering, virtual-asset services fall under customer due-diligence and suspicious-transaction reporting duties. A string of small transfers to different people, with references like "USDT" or "crypto", can prompt questions. More importantly: if the money you receive as a seller came from a fraud victim, your account can be frozen while police investigate, even though you did nothing wrong.
Tax does not change with the channel. Since 1 January 2024, under Law 29/2023, individuals' gains from crypto-assets are taxed at 15% and self-declared by 31 March. Screenshot every P2P order with its date, price and amount: you will need them for your bank and for your return. Details in crypto tax in Albania.
06Common P2P scams
Most P2P scams don't break escrow. They persuade you to step around it. These are the ones you will meet most often:
The forged payment proof. The buyer sends a screenshot of a bank transfer that looks genuine and pushes you to release the coins. The money never arrives. The rule: release only when you see the money in your own banking app, never on the strength of a picture.
Third-party payment. The money arrives from an account in someone else's name. Often that is the victim of a separate scam who has been told they are paying for something else entirely. When they complain, the bank reverses the payment or freezes your account, and the coins are gone. Reject any payment that doesn't come from the buyer's own name.
The chargeback. Reversible methods, such as cards or some e-wallets, let a buyer claw the money back after receiving the coins. That is why serious ads accept only bank transfers.
"Let's continue on Telegram." Any request to cancel the order and carry on off-platform, for a "better rate" or "no fee", is a red flag. Off the platform there is no escrow and no appeal.

07How to make a safe P2P trade, step by step
If you decide to try P2P, in lek or in euros, this is the routine we walk readers through. It doesn't make the risk zero, but it removes the commonest mistakes.
- Verify your account and switch on 2FAComplete KYC on the exchange and enable two-factor authentication. Unverified accounts cannot trade P2P on the big platforms.
- Choose the seller carefullyLook at completed trades, completion rate and average release time. Avoid brand-new accounts offering prices far better than the market.
- Read the ad termsCheck the minimum, which bank the seller accepts and the payment window. Ask in the platform chat before you pay, not after.
- Pay only from your own accountThe name on the transfer must be yours. Don’t write “crypto” or “USDT” in the reference unless the seller asks; use the order number.
- Confirm on time and keep evidencePress “I have paid” only after the transfer has been sent. Keep the receipt and screenshots of the chat.
- If something is wrong, appealDon’t release, don’t cancel under pressure and don’t move to another app. The platform decides on the evidence in the order chat.
For large amounts P2P is the wrong venue: there isn't the liquidity, and the risk grows with the ticket. See our guide to crypto OTC. To turn crypto back into lek, the clearest route is in selling and cashing out, and every method is compared in ways to buy.
Frequently asked questions
Does Binance P2P work in Albania?
Binance lists the Albanian lek as a P2P currency, but on 2 October 2026 there were no ads letting you buy USDT with lek and just one ad letting you sell, at 72.13 ALL per USDT. The only payment methods were “Bank Transfer” and “OTP BANK”. In euros, Binance’s P2P market is far deeper.
Where is the most lek P2P liquidity?
On OKX. On 2 October 2026 it showed about five bank-transfer ads for buying USDT, the best at about 78.15 ALL per USDT, while the bank reference rate was 81.40 ALL per dollar. Payment methods were “bank” and Paysera. Bybit, KuCoin and Bitget had no lek ads at all.
Is P2P with escrow safe?
Escrow protects both sides only while everything stays on the platform. The coins are locked until the seller confirms payment. The main risks sit outside escrow: forged payment screenshots, payments from third-party accounts, and requests to move the conversation to Telegram or WhatsApp.
Can my bank freeze my account because of P2P?
It can ask questions. Banks apply anti-money-laundering rules, and many transfers to or from strangers, or money that turns out to come from a fraud victim, can lead to queries, delays or a temporary freeze. Pay only from your own account and keep a record of every trade.
