01Shkodër on the crypto map
Search “bitcoin Shkoder” and the result may surprise you. Albania’s fourth-largest municipality is, in its own quiet way, the most crypto-minded town outside Tirana. Not because of banks or exchanges, but because two of the only four places in the whole country that OpenStreetMap tags as accepting crypto are here.
Shkodër municipality has 102,434 residents according to INSTAT’s 2023 census; the city itself about 61,633. Along with Elbasan, it saw the steepest population decline between 2011 and 2023. It has Luigj Gurakuqi University and, according to the investment agency AIDA, is Albania’s third ICT and outsourcing hub. Tirana is 98 km south, about 1 h 59 min by OSRM; Lezhë is 38 km away.
What makes Shkodër different for crypto is who passes through. The city is the main road link between Tirana and Podgorica and the gateway to the lake, Theth and Valbona. Every summer thousands of backpackers and hikers stay in its hostels, many with foreign cards, a few euros in their pocket and sometimes a Lightning wallet on their phone.
0290 Pods: the hostel and coworking space that takes sats
In October 2026 BTC Map listed only two places in the whole of Albania as accepting bitcoin. One is a holiday flat in Golem; the other is this.
- Type
- Hostel + coworking
- Address
- Rruga Jeronim De Rada 30

- On-chain

It is the only venue in Albania on OpenStreetMap that combines bitcoin acceptance with a coworking space. Acceptance was last confirmed on 9 September 2024, more than a year ago, so ask at reception before you pay. Another hostel in town, Englishman Hostel Shkoder, carries an OSM tag saying it accepts cryptocurrencies, but with no check date and no detail on which ones.
For remote work, Shkodër also has Shkodra Coworking, which is on the map, and the Arka youth centre, listed as coworking by AlbaniaTech in 2022. So a digital nomad can, on paper at least, work, sleep and pay in sats without leaving a single street.

03Before you head for Theth and Valbona
Most travellers passing through Shkodër come for the mountains, not for crypto. In the mountain villages we would not rely on finding an ATM or a card terminal, let alone anyone taking bitcoin. Our advice is to get ready in town. Here is a practical order of things.
- Get cash in ShkodërThe city has 13 mapped ATMs and 16 exchange offices. Take enough lek for your whole stay in the mountains.
- Decline the ATM’s conversionIf the machine offers to charge you in your card’s currency, choose lek. Your own bank’s conversion usually works out cheaper.
- Pay in sats where it is acceptedIf you carry a Lightning wallet, 90 Pods is the place to try it, once reception has confirmed.
- Don’t swap crypto for cash with strangersNo hostel common room or travellers’ chat is the place for cash P2P. Fraud risk is real.
- Keep euros for the borderIf you continue into Montenegro, hold a few euros for a taxi or bus after the crossing.
04Lek, euro and the Montenegro border
Montenegro uses the euro, so many travellers assume Podgorica is Shkodër’s cross-border fallback for everything, a Bitcoin ATM included. Be careful. Sources on crypto ATMs in Montenegro contradict each other, and neither OpenStreetMap nor BTC Map shows any machine there as of October 2026. Radio Free Europe has mentioned a “first cryptomat” in the country at some point, but we found no current location.
| Shkodër | Podgorica (ME) | |
|---|---|---|
| Currency | Lek (ALL) | Euro (EUR) |
| Distance | — | 61 km, about 1 h 30 min (OSRM) |
| Bitcoin ATM on OSM | No | No; sources disagree |

Our message is simple: Podgorica is about an hour and a half away, but don’t make the trip just for a Bitcoin ATM without checking Coin ATM Radar first. For Shkodër residents, buying online is far easier and cheaper than any journey. For the wider north, including Kukës and the Kosovo machines, see our page on Lezhë and Kukës.
0516 exchange offices for 61,000 people
Within 3.5 km of the centre, OpenStreetMap shows 22 bank points (Raiffeisen, Union, BKT, Intesa, Credins, ABI and NOA), 13 ATMs, 16 exchange offices and 5 money-transfer points including Western Union and Easypay. Sixteen bureaux is a lot for a city of roughly 61,000; Vlorë, with slightly more people in the city proper, has only five mapped.
That density makes sense in a border town where Montenegrin euros, tourist euros and emigrant money all meet the lek. For a crypto user it means the last step, turning euros from an online sale into lek, can happen close to home at a competitive rate.
06The May 2022 warehouse
Shkodër has its own crypto headline too, less charming than the hostel. On 27 May 2022, according to Albanian Daily News, police found a warehouse with 16 mining devices hooked up to the grid illegally. An OSHEE meter reader was prosecuted, and narcotics were seized in the same operation.
The case fits a national pattern: Fier in 2021, Shijak in January 2022, Shkodër in May 2022. In none of them was mining itself the problem, since it is not banned in Albania; the problem was stolen electricity. If someone asks to host “a few machines” in your garage on a special power line, that is a criminal offence, not an investment. The rules are on our crypto mining page.
07For Shkodër students and residents
For a student at Luigj Gurakuqi University or someone working at one of the city’s outsourcing firms, the route is the same as in Tirana: an international platform that does not exclude Albania, ID verification, card or SEPA payment, and withdrawals to your own account when you sell. Your wallet matters most if you want to use Lightning; we explain the options in crypto wallets.
On national rules: no platform is licensed by AMF under Law 66/2020 as of October 2026 (is crypto legal in Albania), gains are taxed at 15% and declared by 31 March (crypto tax), and we rank the platforms in crypto exchanges. Other towns are on the city map.
