Korçë has long thought in two currencies. Greek investment, families with jobs across the border and trade with Kastoria have made the euro part of daily life, while the streets around the centre are lined with small family-run exchange offices. For crypto, none of this has produced a single ATM or merchant yet. It has, however, raised a few practical questions that don’t come up the same way in Tirana, plus one warning tied directly to the town’s money lenders.
01Korçë by the numbers: a small town with a border economy
The 2023 census by INSTAT puts Korçë municipality at 60,754 residents and the town itself at about 43,254 (the town figure is Wikipedia’s reading of the same census). It is the largest centre of the south-east and the seat of a county that also takes in Pogradec.
The local economy rests on knitwear, rugs, brewing and farming, and Fan S. Noli University has been here since 1971. Most foreign investment comes from Greece or from Albanian-Greek joint ventures, and Wikipedia describes Korçë as having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. By road, Tirana is 158 km and roughly three hours away according to the OSRM router, while Kastoria in Greece is just 66 km. The map says a lot about which way money flows.
On crypto the picture is clear. No Bitcoin ATM is mapped on OpenStreetMap/BTC Map in Korçë as of October 2026; check Coin ATM Radar for live status. There are no mapped bitcoin-accepting merchants and no licensed exchange office selling crypto. What Korçë does have is a dense cash network.
02Exchange offices and money lenders: what the map reveals
When we counted financial points on OpenStreetMap within 3 km of the centre, one figure jumped out. Alongside the banks and exchange offices, the map shows 11 money lenders, an unusual number for a town of this size. The chart below shows every category. These are volunteer-mapped counts, useful for comparison rather than as official statistics.
The exchange offices are mostly family shops with the owner’s name over the door. They swap euros for lek and back, but none sells crypto under a licence. Under Law No. 66/2020 that kind of service needs an AMF licence, and AMF has licensed nobody. If an office offers you “USDT for cash”, it is operating outside any supervision.
All the main banks are present: BKT, Credins, Intesa, ABI, OTP, ProCredit, Tirana Bank, Raiffeisen, Union and Fibank. So any resident can hold a Visa or Mastercard that works with international platforms, which is the most direct way to buy crypto from Korçë.
03Kapshticë, Kastoria and Thessaloniki: where the ATMs are
The road from Korçë into Greece runs through the Kapshticë crossing. Kastoria is 66 km and about 1 hour 5 minutes away; Thessaloniki is 247 km, just under three hours in free-flowing traffic. We could not verify whether Kastoria has a crypto ATM. In Thessaloniki, OpenStreetMap shows three: two Shitcoins.club machines (Anagenniseos 30 and Delfon 96) and one run by Bcash. We haven’t checked their fees; for reference, the Bcash machine in Ioannina charges 8% to buy.
The board makes the point: for a Korçë resident, driving to a Bitcoin ATM makes no economic sense. Thessaloniki only works for someone already going there for work, study or family, with euro cash in hand. For everyone else the shortest route is the phone. The full regional map of machines is on our Bitcoin ATM Albania page.
04Greek and EU platforms: what applies to a Korçë resident
A question we hear often from the south-east: “We’re next to Greece, so why not use a European platform with a MiCA licence?” The answer depends on where you live, not how close the border is. An EU entity’s MiCA licence covers customers resident in the European Economic Area. As an Albanian resident, even if you sign up with a brand that holds an EU licence, you are usually served by its international entity, without European investor protection.
That isn’t a reason to panic, just a reason to read carefully. Before depositing, check the terms to see which entity serves you and where it is registered. And if someone suggests opening an account with a Greek address that isn’t yours, don’t: it breaks the platform’s terms and can get your funds frozen.
If you earn euros in Greece, there is a genuine advantage. Albania is in SEPA, with the first transfer completed on 7 October 2025, so a euro account at an Albanian bank can fund a platform cheaply, provided the platform accepts SEPA for your account. For the legal framework at home, where Law 66/2020 is in force and the MiCA-style bill is still a draft, see is crypto legal in Albania. 05Korça Tech and Innovation Hub: what we know and what we don’t
Korçë is one of the few towns outside Tirana with a publicly listed tech space. In March 2022, AlbaniaTech included the “Korça Tech and Innovation Hub”, based at the Thimi Mitko Library, in its list of Albanian co-working spaces. We could not confirm how it operates today, so contact the library before you turn up.
We found no regular bitcoin or crypto meetup in Korçë on Meetup or similar platforms. For Fan S. Noli students who want to learn, online resources and the occasional event in Tirana remain the main options. Our beginner’s guide is a good place to start.
06Pogradec and the road to Ohrid
Pogradec, about 40 km from Korçë, has 46,070 people in the municipality and about 17,371 in the town (INSTAT 2023 and Wikipedia). It sits on Lake Ohrid, part of the UNESCO-listed Ohrid region, roughly 5 km from the North Macedonian border. Tirana is 123 km and about 2 hours 20 minutes away.
OpenStreetMap shows 7 bank points, 6 cash machines and 3 exchange offices in Pogradec. Some tags are out of date (the map still carries the Société Générale Albania name, for instance), so don’t rely on bank names there without checking. No Bitcoin ATM is mapped on OpenStreetMap/BTC Map in Pogradec as of October 2026; check Coin ATM Radar for live status.
Ohrid is 53 km and about an hour from Pogradec. Plenty of people assume it is an alternative, but when we checked, neither OpenStreetMap nor BTC Map listed any crypto ATM in North Macedonia, in Ohrid or in Skopje. If you go to Ohrid, go for the lake, not for bitcoin. Pogradec also gets a short mention on our Fier, Berat and the south page.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Korçë?
No. As of October 2026 no Bitcoin ATM is mapped on OpenStreetMap or BTC Map in Korçë or in Pogradec. The nearest mapped machines are in Thessaloniki, about 247 km away. We found none for Kastoria or Ohrid. Check Coin ATM Radar for live status.
Can I use a Greek or EU-licensed crypto platform from Korçë?
A MiCA licence held by an EU entity protects customers who live in the European Economic Area. As a Korçë resident you are served as a customer from Albania, usually by the platform’s international entity and without that protection. Always check which legal entity opens your account.
Is it a good idea to borrow money to buy crypto?
No. Crypto can lose a large part of its value within days, while your loan repayment stays the same. Korçë has a lot of money lenders for its size, but no loan should be used to buy something this volatile. Only put in money you can afford to lose.
How far is Ohrid from Pogradec, and does it have a Bitcoin ATM?
According to the OSRM router, Ohrid is 53 km and about an hour from Pogradec. In October 2026 we found no crypto ATM anywhere in North Macedonia on either OpenStreetMap or BTC Map, so Ohrid is not an option for buying bitcoin with cash.
