01The Riviera in numbers: few residents, many visitors
Searches for “crypto Saranda” or “bitcoin Ksamil” mostly come from foreigners: tourists, holiday-let owners and digital nomads. Their real question is rarely where to buy bitcoin. It is how to pay on the Riviera without losing money, and whether crypto helps. The short answer: cards and ATMs are everywhere, crypto almost nowhere.
Sarandë municipality has 22,613 residents according to INSTAT’s 2023 census; the town itself about 19,882. Ksamil, an administrative unit of Sarandë inside Butrint National Park, had about 2,731 at the census, as cited by Wikipedia. Himarë municipality, further north, has 8,328. Small numbers, but in summer the coast fills up: Albania welcomed a record 12.4 million foreign visitors in 2025.
Distances are long. Tirana is 253 km from Sarandë, about 4 h 08 min by OSRM in free-flowing traffic, and 264 km from Ksamil; in August, allow more. Himarë is 217 km from Tirana and 62 km from Vlorë. Gjirokastër, 53 km inland, is the overland gateway to Greece.
02Many ATMs, few banks
This is what sets the Riviera apart from every other Albanian town. OpenStreetMap shows 32 ATMs within 2.5 km of central Sarandë, with Fibank running 7 and OTP 5, but only 10 bank points. In Ksamil, within 1.5 km, there are 18 ATMs and a single bank, Tirana Bank. In Himarë: 11 ATMs and 2 bank points.
Why does it matter? Because a cash machine with no branch nearby is a tourist machine. If your card is retained, if the ATM debits you without dispensing, or if you want to query a fee, Ksamil has exactly one branch. Sarandë also has 10 mapped exchange offices; Ksamil just one, plus a MoneyGram point. Among Ksamil’s machines is a “MoneyGet”-branded unit: check the on-screen fee before using it.
03Dynamic currency conversion and ATM fees
With so many tourist ATMs, the main risk is not running out of cash but overpaying for it. Many machines and card terminals offer dynamic currency conversion, or DCC: instead of charging you in lek, they show the amount in euros, pounds or złoty and ask you to accept. The rate they use is usually worse than your own bank’s.
Your home bank may also charge for foreign withdrawals, so one larger withdrawal usually beats five small ones. The same goes for crypto cards: if you carry a debit card linked to an exchange, check its ATM and FX fees. Which crypto cards are actually issued to Albanian residents is covered in crypto cards.

04Euro or lek?
Albania’s official currency is the lek. On 2 October 2026 the reference rates gave about 92 lek to the euro. On the Riviera many rentals, boat trips and restaurants quote in euros, especially for visitors from Italy, Poland and the UK. That is convenient, but not always cheap.
Pay in lek
- The real price, no improvised rate
- Your card converts at your bank’s rate
- Change comes in the right currency
- Best for small purchases and markets
Pay in euros
- Handy for rentals and excursions
- The business’s rate can be poor
- Change often in lek, rounded
- Watch for DCC at the terminal
As a rule of thumb: lek for everyday spending, euros only when the price is clearly set in euros and you have compared. For Albanian residents taking payments from tourists in euros, a euro bank account avoids pointless conversions and lets you use SEPA if you ever want to buy crypto.
05Paying on the Riviera, method by method
The only Sarandë business that OpenStreetMap tags as accepting cryptocurrencies is EasyGo Rental, a car-hire firm on Rruga Mitat Hoxha. The tag carries no date and does not say which coins. BTC Map lists nothing at all in Sarandë, Ksamil or Himarë. If you want to pay in crypto, confirm it in writing before booking and never prepay to a wallet you know nothing about.
06The Corfu ferry and the Bitcoin ATM in Ioannina
From Sarandë, Corfu is a 25–35 minute crossing, about 1.5–2 hours door to door, with 4–8 sailings a day in summer and 1–2 in winter from operators such as Ionian Seaways and Finikas Lines. Many visitors therefore arrive from an EU, euro-using island with euros in their pocket. We found no Bitcoin ATM in Corfu on OpenStreetMap or BTC Map.
No Bitcoin ATM is mapped on OpenStreetMap or BTC Map in Sarandë as of October 2026; check Coin ATM Radar for live status. The nearest mapped machine is Bcash in Ioannina, Anexartisias 75: 53 km from Sarandë to Gjirokastër, then 89 km via the Kakavija crossing, roughly 2 h 50 min in total by OSRM. When we checked, the operator’s page listed an 8% fee to buy and 7% to sell, but also showed “ATM is closed” and coins “Sold-Out”. So check before you set off. That route has its own page: Gjirokastër and Kakavija.
07Digital nomads in Saranda
Saranda has become one of the places where digital nomads spend the winter or the shoulder season. Albania offers a “Unique Permit for Digital Mobile Workers”, valid for a year and renewable. One online guide mentions “Saranda Marketing & Coworking” with a sea-view terrace; it is not on OpenStreetMap and we have not verified it ourselves.
For a nomad paid in crypto or holding savings in USDT, the practical questions are two. First: how do you turn it into money you can spend here? Usually by selling on an exchange and withdrawing to a euro account, not by looking for someone with cash on the promenade. Second: where do you pay tax? Tax residence depends on rules that go beyond the permit; if you become an Albanian tax resident, crypto gains are taxed at 15%. See our crypto tax guide and Revolut, Wise and PayPal in Albania.
08Himarë and the Thodex founder’s arrest
The Riviera’s best-known crypto story broke at the end of August 2022. Faruk Fatih Özer, founder of the Turkish exchange Thodex and wanted by the Turkish authorities, was arrested on 30–31 August while on holiday in Albania. Where exactly? Sources disagree. Reuters-based reports say “Vlorë”, which is the county. Cyprus Mail and others speak of “a Himarë resort”. Exit News names Palasë, a beach in Himarë municipality. We report it as Palasë, with that caveat.
Himarë itself follows the Ksamil pattern: 11 mapped ATMs, 2 bank points and 2 exchange offices for a town of about 3,901 people. Dhërmi, Jale, Palasë and Spile fill up in summer and empty in winter. Take cash in town before heading down to the more remote beaches.
National rules in brief: buying and holding crypto is legal, but no platform is licensed by AMF under Law 66/2020 as of October 2026 (is crypto legal in Albania). Platforms that accept Albanian residents are in our crypto exchanges ranking, and other towns on the city map.
