“Buy crypto in Albanian cities” sounds like a job for a map covered in red pins. In reality Albania’s crypto map is almost empty: no verified Bitcoin ATM, no licensed crypto office, and only four businesses in the whole country tagged as accepting crypto. But the map of money around crypto, meaning banks, exchange offices, transfers and borders, varies a great deal from Shkodër to Sarandë. This page compares it.
Every figure comes from an open source and carries a date: population from INSTAT’s 2023 census (always the municipality unless we say otherwise), infrastructure from OpenStreetMap on 2 October 2026, distances from the OSRM router in free-flowing traffic. OpenStreetMap is volunteer-mapped and undercounts smaller towns, so use the numbers to compare places, not as official statistics.
01The map: cities and the Bitcoin ATMs across the border
Click a city to open its guide. The blue points outside the border are the two nearest known Bitcoin ATMs, in Prizren (Kosovo) and Ioannina (Greece). Inside Albania none is mapped.
02The situation in four numbers
The third number needs a word of explanation. Across the other 13 towns we checked, OpenStreetMap shows 93 exchange offices in total, but two-thirds of them are in Fier (31), Shkodër (16) and Korçë (14). The remaining ten towns together have 32, only slightly more than Tirana’s two hotspots around Skanderbeg Square (16) and Blloku (12). That does not mean the offices are missing; often it means nobody has mapped them.
03The four regions: where the infrastructure is
Central: Tirana, Durrës, Elbasan
Everything to do with money is concentrated here. Tirana county holds 758,513 people, about 31.6% of the population. Tirana has 178 bank points mapped within 5 km of the centre, 79 exchange offices, 27 transfer points, seven coworking spaces and the Innovation Hub at the Pyramid. It is also the only city to have hosted crypto events, such as Balkans Crypto 2025. Durrës, 39 km away, adds the port, the Bari ferries and the only flat in the centre of the country taking Lightning. Elbasan, also 39 km from Tirana, works as its satellite.
Adriatic and Ionian coast: Durrës, Vlorë, Sarandë, Himarë
The coast has two faces. Durrës and Vlorë are port cities with outsourcing sectors, where the crypto question is more about property listed as “crypto accepted” and the tokenised flat in Vlorë. Sarandë, Ksamil and Himarë are the tourist Riviera: lots of ATMs, few banks. Sarandë has 32 mapped ATMs and Ksamil 18, yet together they have only 11 bank points.
North: Shkodër, Lezhë, Kukës
The north has the most interesting paradox. Shkodër has two of the country’s four crypto-accepting businesses, including 90 Pods, the only hostel-plus-coworking that takes bitcoin, and 16 exchange offices. Kukës has minimal infrastructure but is the Albanian town closest to a Bitcoin ATM, in Prizren. Lezhë, between them, is among the least served.
South: Gjirokastër, Korçë, Berat, Fier
The south lives with Greece and with remittances. Fier has 31 exchange offices and 9 transfer points, the highest density relative to population in our data. Korçë has 14 exchange offices and 11 mapped money lenders, an unusual number. Gjirokastër is 89 km from the Ioannina Bitcoin ATM. Berat, a UNESCO town, has no mapped exchange office at all, which is most likely a mapping gap.
04City by city: population, exchange offices, nearest ATM
The table covers all 14 towns. Population is the municipality figure from INSTAT 2023. Exchange offices are those mapped on OpenStreetMap within a radius of the centre that ranges from 1.5 to 5 km depending on the town’s size.
| Town | Population (municipality) | Exchange offices (OSM) | Nearest Bitcoin ATM | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tirana | 598,176 | 79 | None in-country; Prizren about 2 h 45 min | Tirana |
| Durrës | 153,614 | 4 | As Tirana; Bari by ferry unchecked | Durrës |
| Elbasan | 115,101 | 2 | As Tirana | Central |
| Shkodër | 102,434 | 16 | Podgorica ? unverified | Shkodër |

| Vlorë | 83,683 | 5 | Ioannina, via Gjirokastër | Vlorë |
| Berat | 62,232 | 0 | Ioannina, via Gjirokastër | Fier & Berat |
| Korçë | 60,754 | 14 | Thessaloniki (GR), 247 km | Korçë |

05Where the exchange offices are, and where they aren’t
For a crypto user, a bureau de change is not where you buy bitcoin; none has an AMF licence to do that. It is where you turn the euros from an online sale into lek, and the more of them nearby, the better the rate tends to be. Here is how they are spread according to OpenStreetMap.
The least-served areas are Lezhë, Kukës, Himarë and Pogradec, each with 1–3 mapped exchange offices and 1–6 ATMs. Berat has no exchange office on the map at all, despite 14 ATMs including an Alpha Bank machine. In these towns your plan should be simple: buy and sell online, withdraw to your bank, and don’t count on a local “crypto changer”, who, if one exists, operates without a licence. At the other extreme, Durrës has just 4 mapped exchange offices despite 39 bank points, a clear sign of under-mapping.

06Bitcoin ATMs across the border
With no machine mapped inside the country, people in the north and south often ask whether it is worth crossing the border. In the north, the Kosovo operator exCoins says it has 5 ATMs, 2 in Pristina and 1 each in Prizren, Peja and Ferizaj, usable without an account. From Kukës, Prizren is 37 km. From Tirana, the road to Prizren via Kukës is about 183 km.
In the south, Bcash has a machine in Ioannina, at Anexartisias 75, charging 8% to buy and 7% to sell when we checked, though the operator’s page also said “ATM is closed”. It is 89 km from Gjirokastër and about 2 h 50 min from Sarandë. Thessaloniki has Shitcoins.club and Bcash machines on OpenStreetMap, 247 km from Korçë. In Montenegro, North Macedonia and Corfu we found none on OSM or BTC Map. With 7–8% fees and hours on the road, a card purchase online works out far cheaper for most people. Individuals’ gains are taxed at 15% under Law 29/2023, from 1 January 2024, and declared by 31 March: see crypto tax in Albania. Platforms that accept Albanian residents, with fees and scores, are in our crypto exchange ranking. And the lek P2P market, thin everywhere, is covered in P2P crypto.
Frequently asked questions
Which Albanian city is easiest for buying crypto?
They are all the same, because buying happens online by card, SEPA or P2P. What changes from city to city is the fiat side: how many banks, exchange offices and transfer points you have nearby to receive or change money after a sale. Tirana has the densest network, with 79 exchange offices mapped on OpenStreetMap.
Is there a Bitcoin ATM in any Albanian city?
Not a verified one. As of October 2026 OpenStreetMap and BTC Map show no Bitcoin ATM in Albania; check Coin ATM Radar for live status. The nearest are across the border: exCoins in Kosovo (Prizren, Pristina, Peja, Ferizaj) and Bcash in Ioannina, Greece. See Bitcoin ATM Albania.
Where is bitcoin accepted as payment in Albania?
In very few places. OpenStreetMap tags four businesses in the whole country: two hostels in Shkodër, a holiday flat in Golem and a car-hire firm in Sarandë. BTC Map lists only two of them, 90 Pods in Shkodër and Apartment 37 in Golem, both last checked in 2024. Always ask before paying.
Which Albanian city is closest to a Bitcoin ATM?
Kukës, with Prizren in Kosovo just 37 km or about 40 minutes away, where exCoins runs a machine. In the south, Gjirokastër is 89 km or about 1 h 47 min from the Bcash machine in Ioannina. Check both on Coin ATM Radar before travelling.
